The main navigation is using JS, will this have a negative impact on SEO?

Hi mozzers,
We just redesigned our homepage and discovered that our main nav is using JS and when disabling JS, no main nav links was showing up. Is this still considered bad practice for SEO? https://cl.ly/14ccf2509478

Googlebot does not render JavaScript
We hear very often about JavaScript rendering is the assumption that the crawler is responsible for the rendering. But that's not the case. The rendering is done by the indexer (from Google Caffeine).More specifically, the Web Rendering Service (WRS), which is part of Google Caffeine. And this is exactly where the second great difficulty lies in the area of JavaScript SEO.
Gary Illyes says: "Also, to clarify, WRS is a subsystem of Caffeine, just like the PageRanker (cos yes, we still use it) or the canonicalization algorithm."
The process flow between the crawler and the indexer:
HTML files are downloaded.
CSS and JavaScript data will be downloaded in parallel.
WRS (Web Rendering Service) (part of Google Caffeine) is used to run JS.
WRS renders all files.
Now Google Caffeine can index the content if necessary.
And that's when Googlebot can crawl new links.
Why is that a problem? For the crawler to be able to enter the content and follow the links, it must first pass the data to the indexer. The indexer renders the content and returns it to the crawlers. Only now can the crawler see the content and follow the links. On the next page, the game starts again. Page by page. (many processes)Unlike conventional pages, where the crawler crawls numerous pages and, after crawling, passes everything collectively to the indexer. (few processes)
This process presents another challenge to search engines.

The only bad SEO Practice regarding JS that I've of is trying to hide the JS files from Search Engines, apparently, Google needs to render a whole page as it indexing it; so blocking any JS (& CSS for that matter) isn't a good thing.

JS rendered UI isn't negative, it is however not a good practice also.

Default Wordpress 301 Redirects of JS and CSS files. Bad for SEO & How to Fix?
Hi there: We are developers with some digital marketing expertise, but a current issue has us perplexed. An outside SEO firm has asked us to clean up a large number of 301 redirects. Most of these are 'default' Wordpress behavior that relate to calling the latest version of a JS or CSS file. For instance, a JS file is called with this: https://websitexyz.com/wp-includes/js/wp-embed.min.js?ver=4.9.1 but ultimately redirects to this: https://websitexyz.com/wp-includes/js/wp-embed.min.js. We are being asked to prevent the redirect from happening by, presumably, calling the ultimate file to begin with. The issue is that, as far as we know, there's no easy way to alter WP behavior to call the ultimate file to begin with. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Is DOCTYPE important for SEO?
Hello fellow Mozzers. I am just having a brief look at a potential clients website before speaking to them tomorrow and whilst looking at the source I noticed that they don't appear to have a clear definition for their Doctype. All the have at the top of each page is I have to admit that Doctypes aren't my strong point but I know that they are normally slightly more descriptive than this. Can this have any effect on rankings? or is this just an issue for W3C validation? Thanks 🙂

Will having image lightbox with content on a web page SEO friendly?
This website is done in CMS. Will having lightbox pop up with content be SEO friendly? If you go to the web page and click on the images at the bottom of the page. There are lightbox that will display information. Will these lightbox content information be crawl by Google? Will it be consider as content for the url http://jennlee.com/portfolio/bran.. Should I nofollow the main navigation on certain pages?
We have several large Ecommerce sites with hundreds of links on each page. I have been trying to think of ways to focus our internal linking to increase certain pages relevancy. My thought was to put nofollow in the main navigation (since there are hundreds of links there controlled by dropdowns) and only follow the links on each page for the products we are selling and promoting (15-20 links). I would still be using a sitemap that includes the links. Is this a terrible idea? if a link is nofollowed in the main navigation does that still count as the one mention for google if it points to the same page that a normal link points too that is in the content of the page? since all of the main navigation is the same on every page of the website would it be good to only put nofollow on the subpages/subsections and leave the home page navigation alone (that would allow the spiders to crawl all of those links on the home page but not crawl those same links on the subsections where I could then focus the linking).
