      Hi MozTeam,

      We have a website that is used as our partner login for our Partners to see their stats, but it is located on a SEPARATE domain from our main corporate website. We currently have thousands of people logging into the external portal every month, which we are obviously not getting good SEO credit for. I am considering bringing the entire login portal into our main corporate website, so that Google sees how popular and useful our site becomes when thousands more people are visiting... We only get a few thousands organic visits to the corporate site per month and about 3x that to the partner login portal. This is why I originally thought we could benefit from bringing it into our corporate site.

      Challaneges: our website is in .asp but we are launching a new version of it next month, switching it to Wordpress and into .php....but the current partner login website is still in .asp!

      Questions:

      1. How will bringing this site into the main corporate site benefit us as far as SEO?

      2. What is the proper way to combine an .asp site with a .php site?

      3. If we have to use an iFrame because we can't mix the two languages, will that affect our SEO benefit?

      Pls advise, as if this is actually a good idea, I'd like to get it launched along with the site redesign that is currently under way.

        Well, the only alternatives you have to that are:

        • Don't change it
        • Open the whole partner site in a frame
        • Rebuild the whole partner site

        It's worth mentioning that I personally  don't believe that bounce rate is a metric that any sane engine would use as a ranking factor.  I'm not that sure about time on site either (you could argue cases for both being negative factors as well).

        I don't think that a frame is going to fool anyone.  So if you really want to send that signal and believe you need to do the whole thing then I think you are stuck with having the only option being rebuild your partner area.

        Unless your partner area is very basic indeed, I can't see that being worthwhile myself.

          Wouldn't this boost our Bounce Rates and slash our AAvg Time On Site...by having the majority of traffic going to a login page, then leaving the site within 30 seconds?

          I like the idea of routing this traffic through our main site, but would it be more loss than gain considering these aspects?

            Hi Derek,

            This question is trickier than it first appears, as a lot of the answer depends on how your back-end is set up.

            My suggestion would be to move the login form to the main site, and leave the partner site where it is.  You can probably have that form target the existing login routine quite easily.  That would mean that you could direct people to the main site (lots of direct visitors) where they fill in the form and are then transferred to the existing partner site.

            You wouldn't get any benefit from the dwell times, as these would be on the other domain, but the work involved is probably significantly less - even if your partner site is quite simple.

            So - keep that possible solution in mind and I'll answer your questions from that viewpoint.

            1. Very hard to say. It's a good signal though, so as long as it makes sense to the customer then it could be worth a shot - even just as "insurance" against the next update.  However I wouldn't expect massive improvements just from this... definitely not enough to warrant a major change to a partner set-up!

            2. Either replace one of them, or find a way to move elegantly between the two.  You really are not going to get both systems working on the same domain in any practical way (unless you use subdomains) very easily.

            3. You could iframe the login form.  No huge harm in doing so, but just having the form target the other domain is probably simpler and tidier.

              Subdomain replaced domain in Google SERP

              Good morning, This is my first post.  I found many Q&As here that mostly answer my question, but just to be sure we do this right I'm hoping the community can take a peak at my thinking below: Problem: We are relevant rank #1 for "custom poker chips" for example. We have this development website on a subdomain (http://dev.chiplab.com).  On Saturday our live 'chiplab.com' main domain was replaced by 'dev.chiplab.com' in the SERP. Expected Cause: We did not add NOFOLLOW to the header tag. We also did not DISALLOW the subdomain in the robots.txt. We could have also put the 'dev.chiplab.com' subdomain behind a password wall. Solution: Add NOFOLLOW header, update robots.txt on subdomain and disallow crawl/index. Question: If we remove the subdomain from Google using WMT, will this drop us completely from the SERP? In other words, we would ideally like our root chiplab.com domain to replace  the subdomain to get us back to where we were before Saturday.  If the removal tool in WMT just removes the link completely, then is the only solution to wait until the site is recrawled and reindexed and hope the root chiplab.com domain ranks in place of the subdomain again?               For URLs that require login, should our redirect be 301 or 302?

              We have a login required section of our website that is being crawled and reporting as potential issues in Webmaster Tools. I'm not sure what the best solution to this is - is it to make URLs requiring a login noindex/nocrawl? Right now, we have them 302 redirecting to the login page, since it's a temporary redirect, it seems like it isn't the right solution. Is a 301 better?

              Microsites: Subdomain vs own domains

              I am working on a travel site about a specific region, which includes information about lots of different topics, such as weddings, surfing etc. I was wondering whether its a good idea to register domains for each topic since it would enable me to build backlinks. I would basically keep the design more or less the same and implement a nofollow navigation bar to each microsite. e.g.
              weddingsbarcelona.com
              surfingbarcelona.com or should I rather go with one domain and subfolders: barcelona.com/weddings
              barcelona.com/surfing I guess the second option is how I would usually do it but I just wanted to see what are the pros/cons of both options. Many thanks!

              Disavowin a sitewide link that has Thousands of subdomains. What do we tell Google?

              Hello, I have a hosting company that partnered up with a blogger template developer that allowed users to download blog templates and have my footer links placed sitewide on their website.  Sitewides i know are frowned upon and that's why i went through the rigorous Link Audit months ago and emailed every webmaster who made "WEBSITENAME.Blogspot.com" 3 times each to remove the links. I'm at a point where i have 1000 sub users left that use the domain name of "blogspot.com".  I used to have 3,000! Question: When i disavow these links in Webmaster tools for Google and Bing, should i upload all 1000 subdomains of "blogspot.com" individually and show Google proof that i emailed all of them individually, or is it wise to just include just 1 domain name (www.blogspot.com) so Google sees just ONE big mistake instead of 1000. This has been on my mind for a year now and I'm open to hearing your intelligent responses.

              Complimentary sub-brand; subdomain, subfolder, something else?

              Hello forum! I have a question about subdomains vs. subfolders for a new sub-brand for a company. The company is looking at creating a sub-brand delivering a different service to the parent company. It is complimentary in a sense, but it would need a very different marketing strategy. It is not trying to 'hide' its parent brand at all, but instead would leverage the parent brand as added social proof. I've read that creating a subdomain essentially means starting from scratch in terms of SEO, and that a subfolder would better leverage the domain authority the TLD has accrued. However, creating a subfolder does not really gel with me, as it would not in my opinion provide a good experience for visitors. I.e. it's like running a website that sells electronics and having a subfolder marketing IT support services. Yes, there is some synergy-- but it can also lead to visitor confusion. I'd love your opinions on this! Carlo

              Use of subdomains, subdirectories or both?

              Hello, i would like your advice on a dilemma i am facing. I am working a new project that is going to release soon,  thats a network of users with personal profiles seperated in categories for example lets say the categories are colors. So let say i am a member and i belong in red color categorie and i got a page where i update my personal information/cv/resume as well as a personal blog thats on that page. So the main site is giving the option to user to search for members by the criteria of color. My first idea is that all users should own a subdomain (and this is how its developed so far) thats easy to use and since the domain name is really small (just 3 letters) i believe subdomain worth since personal site will be easy to remember. My dilemma is should all users own a subdomain, a subdirectory or both and if both witch one should be the canonical? Since it said that search engines treat subdomains as different stand-alone sites, whats best for the main site? to show multiple search results with profiles in subdomains or subdirectories? What if i use both? meaning in search results i use search directory url for each profile while same time each profile owns a subdomains as well? and if so which one should be the canonical?               Redirect a subdomain to a subdirectory for SEO purposes.

              Hi, I have a site on wordpress and I want to add eCommerce to it. We want to go with Shopify but Shopify only allows to host their platform on a subdomain. I like to have it on a subdorectory, so my question is: Would it make sense to redirect the whole subdomain to a subdirectory (move everything from shop.domain.com to domain.com/shop) for SEO purposes? Would Google see these pages as if they were part of the main domain? Thanks! Julien
